Patient Stories

'Diane'

Throughout her life Diane has been in good health, and though she has not had medical insurance in almost 20 years, she has gotten by with basic medical checkups each year.

In early 2006, more serious medical issues arose. She needed to see specialists, but did not know how she would pay for their services.

A caring friend told her about Project Access. Project Access helped her find specialists who volunteered to consult on her health issues at no cost. Over the last year, she has worked with Project Access physicians to resolve several serious conditions.

She describes Project Access staff as “just a wonderful group” and says they are “so willing to help.” She believes she wouldn’t be having these surgeries without the physician participation in Project Access. Project Access thanks Elizabeth Siegel, ARNP, Dr. Christopher Wolfe, Dr. Clyde Carpenter, Dr. Rajesh Arakal, Dr. James McDowell, and Dr. Yoshihiro Yamamoto for volunteering their time to care for this patient.

'Dee'

Dee was in poor health and began receiving care from Sea Mar Health Clinic. She was told about Project Access in her efforts to obtain medical insurance coverage.

Then she found out she had cancer. Dee says this was not a time she needed the stress of worrying about money and medical insurance. She says Project Access was a lifesaver – so caring and she “didn’t feel like a number”. Project Access connected her to specialists, coordinated no cost care, and helped her get the insurance coverage and care she needed.

Today Dee is in remission. She thanks her physicians, providers, and staff. She wants others to know that the staff at Project Access is the best – full of compassion and caring for those in need.

Project Access thanks Dr. Susan Powell, Dr. Steven Norton, Providence St. Peter Hospital, and Western Washington Oncology for making Dee’s care possible.

'Carol'

Losing her job at age 60 meant no medical insurance for Carol and little hope of being able to purchase her needed blood pressure medicine. When she could no longer afford the medicine she stopped taking it. Her condition got much worse.

Signs of a stroke led her to seek medical care at the local free clinic and SeaMar. She was then told about Project Access and how it could help her find a specialist. Project Access found Carol the Neurologist she needed for special tests. It also helped her connect to medical insurance through the state's Basic Health Plan.

Though Carol still struggles with the costs of medical care she is able to manage her health better and is so grateful to Project Access and its "thoughtful and caring" staff. Without Project Access Carol says no physician would see her, so for her this help was important to get back on her feet and start job hunting again.

For anyone trying to make that connection with medical care she recommends Project Access!

Project Access thanks Elizabeth Siegel, ARNP and Dr. James McDowell for making Carol’s care possible.

'John'

John hadn't been to a doctor in years. Now he needed hernia surgery and didn't know where to turn.

He found Project Access in the listings of Thurston County resources and asked for help. Project Access helped him get the surgery he needed to feel more comfortable. It also helped him sign up for Washington's Basic Health Plan so that he could get regular care from a doctor. He says this helped him a lot.

John is now working full time at a company that offers medical insurance. He has to pay his own medical premiums but he is glad to now be healthy and working. He works for an agency that gives back to the community and he feels good about that.

He is thankful he found Project Access. He feels his health is much better because Project Access got him the healthcare he needed, when he needed it most.

Project Access thanks Donna Elam, PA, Northwest Radiology, Dr. William Willard, and Providence St. Peter Hospital for making John's care possible.
